Coca-Cola:
While Coca-Cola is one of the world’s most popular drinks, it was originally invented as a product that would help alleviate headaches and anxiety as would help individuals who suffered from serious morphine addictions. The inventor of Coca-Cola John Pemberton refined his recipe over two decades until it became a carbonated, sweet drink.
Mountain Dew:
Another soda that was invented for another purpose is Mountain Dew. While Mountain Dew is usually enjoyed as it is, it was first designed to be mixed with a strong spirit, whiskey.
Listerine:
While Listerine is used as a mouth wash, it was originally intended to be a medical antiseptic. When it was first released over 100 years ago, it was marketed as being able to cure a wide variety of ailments such as a cure for the cold, a treatment for corns that grow on feet, and a dandruff treatment.
Kotex:
While Kotex is known for producing feminine hygiene products such as sanitary pads, their sanitary pads were first invented as surgical dressings. However, after WWI when the demand for surgical dressings subsided the company decided to turn their surgical dressings into sanitary pads for women.
Bubble wrap:
You may be shocked to hear that bubble wrap was originally intended to serve as wallpaper for homes, however in the end bubble wrap was used to safely package items to be sent in the post.
Play Dough:
Chances are high that you played with Play Dough as a child. However, you may not realize that Play Dough was once used to clean soot particles off the wallpaper. However, when vinyl wallpaper was invented, it could easily be cleaned with water alone which made this product obsolete. As a result, the creators of Play Dough remarketed their product as a child’s toy.
High heels:
High heels were originally invented to help Persian cavalries to keep their balance while shooting arrows from the back of horses. Later in history in the 17th century, high heels become fashionable for French noblemen. It wasn’t until far later in history that they become popular with women.
Braille:
Braille which is a language primarily used by the blind was first used by French soldiers to communicate with each other in the dark, without the need for light. It was a captain of the French army who introduced this system to Louis Braille, who finetuned the language for the visually impaired and blind.
T-shirts:
Most individuals wear t-shirts on a regular basis, however, t-shirts were invented to be worn under the uniforms of US seamen and were designed to be flexible and easy to move in.
Black dress:
While black dresses are seen as the epitome of sophistication, they were usually only worn as morning dresses and were worn at funerals. However, today black dresses are just as likely to be worn on a date night as they are to a funeral.
So hopefully you have discovered at least one item that you use on a day to day basis which was originally invented for an entirely different purpose.
